Abstract
Meta-aminostyrene is produced by passing vapours of meta-aminophenylmethylcarbinol over a dehydration catalyst at temperatures between 300 DEG and 500 DEG C. A temperature range of 330-440 DEG C. is preferred. An inert diluent such as dioxane, water or benzene may be fed to the reaction zone, together with or separate from, the meta-aminophenylmethylcarbinol. A small amount of air, preferably about 2 per cent of the total vapour volume in the reaction zone at the recorded temperature, may be incorporated in the feed. Specified dehydration catalysts are aluminas, acid-washed aluminas, thorias, titanias, acid-washed titanias and uncalcined diatomaceous silica. In examples, a solution of meta-aminophenylmethylcarbinol in dioxane or water or mixtures thereof was fed to an electrically-heated steel tube containing the dehydration catalyst, the effluent condensed and meta-aminostyrene separated.
