Abstract

The quantity of hydrogen sulphide in a hydrogen sulphide/sulphur dioxide gas mixture is determined continuously by comparing the absorption of infra-red or ultra-violet radiation by the sulphur dioxide in the gas at the start and in the gas after the hydrogen sulphide in it has been catalytically oxidized to sulphur dioxide. This may be done by splitting the gas stream and comparing an oxidized half with an unchanged half and by delaying the unchanged gas stream so that the gases at the analyser are of equal age relative to sampling. By using analysing cells of different lengths the apparatus can be adjusted so as to give a null balance when the ratio of the gases in inverse ratio to the lengths of the cells. Dry air of oxygen may be added to remove excess water vapour in the analyser or the water vapour may be condensed out. Specifications 722,038, 769,995 and 769,996 are referred to.
