Abstract
769,310. Valves controlled by auxiliary valves. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1954 [Oct. 15, 1953], No. 28531/53. Class 135. In an hydraulic valve unit of the kind in which a main valve 11 resiliently biased towards a seating 15 is operated by a piston 34 under the control of a pilot valve 20, and in which the piston works in a cylinder 12 one end of which is connected to the main inlet passage 16 and the other end of which is connected by a by-pass passage 19, 21 containing the pilot valve 20 to the main outlet 22, a spring-loaded bleed control member movable relative to the piston in response to the pressure difference across the piston, is provided for varying the effective area of a bleed passage between the two sides of the piston so that the rate of travel of the main valve is controlled in a predetermined manner. In Fig. 1, the piston 34 and the main valve 11 are mechanically coupled for limited lost-motion, the valve head 13 being urged by a spring 31 against the seating 15, and the piston 34 by a spring 33 against a shoulder 35. The spring 33 also abuts against a fixed plug 32. The valve head 13 is carried on a stem 38 guided in a bore in the piston and carrying a ball-shaped poppet 39 forming the bleed control member. The poppet 39 after initial movement of the piston 34 sits in a hemispherical countersunk mouth 44 in the piston and cuts off the flow through the bleed passage constituted by ducts 41, 42, 43 so that the main valve is entrained by the piston 34. Subsequently the delivery pressure causes the main valve to move towards the plug 32 and the annular passage between the poppet 39 and the mouth 44 re-opens. The available flow area through this annular passage thus depends upon the pressure difference across the piston 34. In a further modification, the piston is integral with the head of the main valve and has a bore containing a shuttle member an orifice in which co-operates with a needle valve rigid with the piston. The shuttle member is normally pressed away from the needle valve by a spring.
