Abstract

Vitamin A aldehyde is obtained in a single reaction step by contacting a hydroxy Vitamin A acetal with a hydrogen halide in an organic solvent containing at least a trace of water for a time sufficient to effect said conversion. The hydrogen halide and organic solvent may be initially present in the form of a water hydrolysable halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethane. Alternatively, aqueous acid or the acid gas such as HCl, HBr or HI, together with the solvent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, isopropyl alcohol and diethyl ether may be utilized. The hydrogen halide should be present in an amount of at least 0.02 per cent by weight, based on the acetal. As hydroxy Vitamin A acetals there may be used Vitamin A 3 : 5-, 3 : 6- or 3 : 7-diol acetals, Vitamin A-3-hydroxy acetal and its desmotropic isomer and Vitamin A-7-hydroxy acetal.
