Abstract

A process for the separation of mixtures of organic liquids by fractional crystallization consists in directly cooling the mixture with liquid carbon dioxide and then separating the crystal pulp so formed. The mixture and the liquid carbon dioxide may be contained in a spiral pipe or pressure vessel and the pressure released, or the carbon dioxide can be allowed to escape from a pressure container through a jet so that it sucks in the mixture to be separated. The temperature may be lowered to -78 DEG C. when the pressure on the carbon dioxide is released. In examples (1) p-xylene is separated from a mixture of xylenes; (2) p-cymene is separated from impurities, such as m-cymene, 1, 2, 3-trimethylbenzene, p-a -dimethylstyrene and C10 hydrocarbons; (3) tertiary butyl alcohol is separated from isopropyl alcohol. Other substances mentioned are 1, 4-diethylbenzene, 1-methyl-4 ethylbenzene, p-methylstyrene, and p-a -dimethylstyrene, which may be separated from mixtures containing them.
