Abstract

A lubricating grease, which has no tendency to flow out of the bearings when the machinery is not operating, is prepared by dispersing a clay in water, adding a surface-active agent and a water-immiscible lubricating oil to the dispersion, removing any water which may separate from the mixture at this stage, subjecting the remaining mixture to a quiescent heating period of between 0.1 and 5 hours at a temperature at which water does not boil off but at an average temperature above 50 DEG C. without any substantial working, and thereafter substantially completing the dehydration while working the composition. The clay may be bentonite, hectorite, saponite, nontronite or attapulgite. The surface-active agent may be of the cationic, anionic or non-ionic type and suitable agents are onium salts (e.g. amine salts or quaternary ammonium salts), longchain aliphatic amines, partial amides formed by the reaction of fatty or rosin acids with aliphatic polyamino hydroxy compounds (e.g. the condensation products of ammonia or amines with halohydrins), hydroxy compounds (e.g. alcohols, glycols, or hydroxy acids), polyvalent metal soaps and the materials known under the Registered Trade Marks "Span" and "Tween." Specific examples of suitable surface-active agents are listed. The lubricating oil may be mineral oil, an ester of dicarboxylic acid (e.g. bis-2-ethylhexyl sebacate), an ester of an acid of phosphorus (e.g. an organic phosphate, phosphonate or phosphinate, particularly tricresyl or trioctyl phosphate), a polyoxyalkylene compound (e.g. ethylene oxidepropylene oxide copolymer or a polymer or copolymer prepared from polyalkylene glycols), a silicone, an organic silicate, a fluorocarbon or a halogenated aromatic. If desired, the clay and a surface-active agent of the onium salt type may be reacted together to produce an onium clay. A water-soluble acid (e.g. phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, hydrofluoric, silicic, boric, acetic, propionic, lactic or citric acid) may be added to the clay dispersion. Antioxidants and anticorrosion agents (e.g. aromatic amines such as phenyl-a -naphthylamine and nitrites such as sodium nitrite) may be added to the grease composition. Apparatus for carrying out the preparation of the grease is described. In an example, the process is applied to the preparation of lubricating grease from hectorite, phosphoric acid, mineral lubricating oil and a partial amide formed by the action of tallow fatty acids on an ammonia-epichlorohydrin condensation product.
