Abstract
Oil containing aromatic and nonaromatic hydrocarbons is subjected to solvent extraction by contacting the oil in an extraction zone with liquid furfural, containing water in an amount no greater than that which would saturate furfural at 75-125 DEG F., to form a raffinate and an extract phase; distilling each phase in separate zones to form azeotropic mixtures of furfural, water and hydrocarbons; condensing the azeotropic mixtures and separating therefrom in a settling zone an upper hydrocarbon-rich phase, and intermediate water-rich phase and a lower furfural-rich phase containing dissolved water; and recycling the furfural-rich phase to the extraction and distillation zones. The water-rich phase may be distilled to yield a water-furfural azeotrope which may be combined with the furfuralrich phase. Extract and raffinate phases are separated from the distillation zones. The settling zone is maintained at 75-125 DEG F.; the upper portion of the extraction zone may be at a temperature of 120-140 DEG F. and the lower portion at 85-100 DEG F. The lower portions of the fractionation zones may be maintained at 550 DEG F. The treatment of cracked or virgin gas oil is described.
