Abstract

768,052. Presses; rollers. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Jan. 10, 1955, No. 741/55. Classes 42 (2) and 140. An apparatus for the preliminary pressing of bent laminated glass and plastic assemblies, comprises a roll housing pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis in a supporting structure and having a limited range of oscillatory movement about its axis, a pair of co-operating nipper rolls mounted horizontally one above the other in the roll housing, means for driving the rolls and check means operatively connected between the supporting structure and the roll housing for limiting the rate of oscillatory movement of the housing about its axis from receiving position to discharge position as the laminated assembly is fed through the rolls. As shown in Fig. 1, nipper rolls 29 are rotatably mounted on either side of T-shaped pivot bars 24 pivotally mounted in bearings in beams 17. To limit the rate of turning of the assembled rolls as the material is passed through, a bar is connected to one end of a pivot bar 24 and is connected through a cross-bar 25 to levers of door cheeks 26 secured to a beam 17, the rate of turning being controlled by adjustment of the door checks. To restore the assembled rolls to the receiving position after discharging the material passed through, an air-piston is provided which co-operates with a crank secured to one end of a pivot bar 24. The beams 17 have nuts 18 engaging the screw-threaded ends of vertical rods 16 mounted on brackets 14 and in bearings 15 secured to main frame members 11. The height of the rolls 29 is adjusted to receive the material fed to them by driven rollers 60 by rotating a handle 23 which drives a chain engaging sprockets 19 on the upper ends of the rods 16. The bearings of the nipper rolls are mounted in T-shaped frames 27 adjustably secured to the bars 24. A driven roll 30 is adjustably mounted in bearing-plates 34 above and below the nipper rolls and an endless belt 32 passes over each nipper and driving roll and round two idler rollers 31 adjustably mounted in bearing-plates 35. The upper roll 30 is driven by a motor 40, mounted on the frame 27, through suitable gearing. The lower roll 30 is driven from the shaft of the upper roll 30 by a chain. The nipper rolls, Fig. 5, comprise a steel tube 43 to which a rubber coating 44 is moulded. The ends beyond the tube may be reinforced with cords. A space 52 is provided in the cover which is filled with air from a tube 49 in a stubshaft 47 which fits into an end member 46. Apertures 55 are provided in the tube and cover for the air to enter the space from the supply pipe. An outer sleeve 53 of rubber which may have cords embedded surrounds the rubber cover 44. Air may be supplied through two stub shafts 47 and 48 and an automatic release valve may be provided to limit the pressure. In an alternative embodiment, the upper inflated nipper roll may be directly driven by a contacting driven roll. Two idler rollers engage the upper nipper roll and three idler -rollers engage the lower nipper roll. The receiving and discharging roller conveyers may be horizontal or inclined. A series of assemblies and conveyers may be combined with a series of ovens.
