Abstract

A process for the crystallization of calcium nitrates by cooling a solution obtained by treating impure calcium phosphate with nitric acid, which solution may also contain an ammonium salt, and separation of the nitrate crystals from the mother lye and finely divided impurities contained therein by straining through a coarse-meshed filtering cloth, is characterized in that the solution is cooled in batches and the crystallization in each batch is nitiated by the addition of seed crystals mainly comprising calcium nitrate, when the solution is between 2 DEG and 10 DEG C. below the saturation temperature, whereby the main body of crystals produced has a granular size less than 2 m.m., while at least 80 per cent by weight of the crystals produced have a granular size between 0.5 and 1.5 m.m., preferably between 0.5 and 1.0 m.m. The raw calcium phosphate is dissolved in nitric acid containing 50 to 65 per cent by weight HNO3, and nitrate of lime dust added, preferably when the temperature is 4 DEG to 7 DEG C. below the saturation temperature. The average granular size of the crystals may be regulated by varying the number of grains of seed crystals added. The solution is moderately stirred during cooling to keep the crystals formed suspended, and the suspension is then filtered through a filter cloth having a mesh of 0.3 to 0.5 m.m., which permits the finely divided insoluble impurities to pass through with the mother lye, and retains the crystals formed. By the process crystals of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, and, when the nitric acid used contains ammonium nitrate, crystals of 5 Ca(NO3)2.NH4 NO3.10H2O, are obtained. Examples are given of processes within, and, for comparison, outside the invention.
