Abstract

767,835. Finishing yarns and threads; thread-guides. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N.V. March 2, 1954 [May 12, 1953], No. 6143/54. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). Bulked yarn i.e. filamentary yarn in which individual filaments comprise loops formed at random, is produced by propelling a twisted artificial yarn through a confined zone by means of a high velocity gas stream and changing the direction of travel of the yarn and reducing its speed without applying further twist after leaving the zone. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn 11 passes to a suction device 13 in which it is caught by a gas e.g. air, supplied through a tube 14 and propelled through a tube 15: the yarn emerging from the tube 15 is deflected by a baffle 16 (or a thread guide 25, Fig. 2, or a sphere 33, Fig. 3 (not shown)), whilst still under the turbulence created by the gas blast and is wound by a device 19 at a speed less (at least 5 per cent.) than the speed at which it is taken off at 10 so that some slack develops near the baffle. This speed ratio is controlled and compensation made for variation in the speed of take up of the bulked yarn in the apparatus of Figs. 4 and 5. Yarn 40 is drawn from a supply 41 by a feed roller 42 and, on issuing from a suction device 43, is deflected by a baffle 45 and passes through guides 46, 47, 48, to a spool 49 rotating on a driven spindle 52: the roll 42 is arranged on a roller 50 mounted on a movable arm 51 and driven by the spool 49 or the yarn package thereon. A quickdrying lacquer may be applied temporarily to the yarn at any stage of the treatment to maintain the loops.
