Abstract

An unsaturated polyester is made by reacting (a) an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. maleic or fumaric) with (b) a dicyclic or tricyclic diol obtainable from dicyclopentadiene or a Diels-Alder adduct of cyclopentadiene and an unsaturated alcohol by treatment with carbon monoxide and hydrogen according to the oxo synthesis and subsequent hydrogenation. The reaction mixture may also include a saturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. succinic, adipic, sebacic, tetrahydrophthalic or phthalic) or another diol (e.g. ethylene, 1,2-propylene, 1,3-butylene, 1,4-butylene or 1,6-hexylenene glycol). The unsaturated polyester may be copolymerized with vinyl compounds (e.g. styrene, alkylstyrenes, chlorostyrenes or vinyl acetate) preferably in presence of peroxides, Redox systems or siccatives. In examples: (1)-(6) maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, the diol obtained by treatment of dicyclopentadiene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen and subsequent hydrogenation, and, if desired, ethylene or diethylene glycol are polycondensed in presence of hydroquinone and trichlorethylphosphorus acid ester or trioctylphosphorous acid ester. Coating compositions are then made comprising the resulting polyester, styrene, cyclohexane or cyclohexanone peroxide, cobalt naphthenate and, if desired, another unsaturated polyester derived from maleic acid, phthalic acid and ethylene or diethylene glycol. (5) Maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and the diol obtained from the adduct of cyclopentadiene and allyl alcohol by treatment with carbon monoxide and hydrogen and subsequent hydrogenation, are polycondensed in presence of hydroquinone and trichlorethyl phosphorous acid ester to give a polyester which is then mixed with styrene.
