[Also in Group XL (c)] A photo-conductive cell P which is to effect a control in accordance with the temperature of rapidly passing bodies but which is to give an output independent of ambient temperature is connected to an amplifier V1 from the output of which a feed-back signal is derived, amplified at V2 rectified at D1 and integrated at R6, C3 by a circuit of time constant long, relative to the pulse received from the heated bodies. Thus the gain of valve V1, which is of the variable mu-type; is adjusted in accordance with average noise level which varies with temperature and the output of valve V1 is a true indication of the temperature of the hot bodies. A similar rectifier D2 and smoothing arrangement may operate a cathode follower V3 to give warning if the noise becomes excessive or zero owing to a faulty cell.
