An animal trap comprises a trapping member 9 pivotally mounted on a base plate 1 and having an extension 6 integral therewith. A lever 13 passes through an aperture 16 in the extension member and is capable at one end of being engaged in an aperture 17 formed in a bait holding member 10 which is pivotally mounted on the base plate. The other end of the lever 13 bears against a leaf spring 14 and is formed with a shoulder 19. In order to set the trap, the extension member 6 is depressed towards the base plate against the action of a spring 5, thereby raising the trapping member 9. On passing the member 6 over the shoulder 19 of the lever 13, the spring 14 acts so as to bring the lever into a position in which it can engage the bait holding member on tilting the latter in an anti-clockwise direction. Once the engagement has been effected, the trap remains in its " set " position when the pressure on the member 6 has been released. When an animal removes the bait from the prong 18 of the bait-holding member, the latter tilts so as to release the lever 13, whereupon the extension 6 is raised by the action of the spring 5 and the trapping member 9 falls on to the base plate 1.
