Abstract

766,024. Speed governors. PRECISION MECANIQUE. Jan. 26, 1955 [Jan. 28, 1954], No. 2387/55. Class 57. [Also in Group XXXII] A constant speed governor M, Fig. 1, is connected to the speed-control device of a machine, such as an internal combustion engine, by a member 1 provided with means to prevent oscillation when the system of forces acting on the governor is disturbed, e.g. by a change of speed. This means consists of an air-tight chamber 3 which is closed at one side by a diaphragm 4 secured to the member 1 and connected to the atmosphere by conduits 5, 6 the effective size of the conduit 5 being adjustable by means of a needle valve 7. Movements of the member 1 are thus resisted by pressure changes in the chamber 3 for a predetermined period which may be adjusted by means of the needle valve 7. The volume of the chamber 3 may also be arranged to be variable during operation. Fig. 4 shows an alternative construction in which an axially-displaceable sleeve 10 under the control of the governor M operates a fuel pump rack rod 1 through a thrust ring 11 and a lever 13, 14. The sleeve 10 co-operates with a fixed sleeve 19 to form a chamber 3 with an adjustable calibrated orifice 20. The chamber and the governor casing 21 are filled to a level N with oil which is forced through the orifice 20 to relieve the pressure on the air in the chamber 3 after a predetermined time. The governor is loaded by a pair of springs 16 supported between collars 17, 18 while a fork 26 connected to the throttle control acts upon collar 18 to enable the fuel feed to be increased. The limiting position of the collar 17 and hence of the rack 1 may be adjusted by a screw 23 the head of which serves as a stop for the collar 17. A small spring 29 is interposed between the collar 17 and the ring 11 to separate these parts at very low speeds and thus provide a supplementary displacement of levers 13, 14 for starting. To permit an increase in the load limit when the speed of the engine decreases the screw 23 is held by a sleeve 25 which has a very small axial displacement against the action of two stiff springs 31. A handle 27 acting directly on the rack 1 may be used to stop the engine.
