Abstract

<PICT:0765545/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0765545/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0765545/IV(a)/3> <PICT:0765545/IV(a)/4> A web or article of polyethylene or the like is treated to render it receptive to printing ink, colouring, adhesive or the like by exposing it to a high voltage electric discharge between spaced electrodes. The web 20, Fig. 2, may be passed over a roller 22 under a gas-filled discharge tube 23 spaced from the roller. The roller and the tube are connected to opposite poles of a high voltage so that a corona discharge exists between their A.C. or D.C. supply. The discharge tube may be replaced by a conducting blade or wire but this involves the danger of arcing where the web is thin or punctured, which danger is avoided by using the gas-filled discharge tube 23. The ends of the tube may be surrounded by insulating sleeves so that the marginal edges of the web are untreated. To speed up the process the web may be passed over a series of rollers 22 each having a discharge tube 23 spaced a short distance away from it. All the rollers may be connected to one pole of the source of supply and all the tubes connected to the other. The series of rollers may alternatively be replaced by a single roller of larger diameter, a series of tubes being spaced a short distance away from the roller surface. For treating both sides of a web simultaneously the supporting rollers 47, Fig. 6, are arranged alternately on opposite sides of the web and the co-operating discharge tubes 48 are likewise placed alternately on opposite sides of the web. The rollers and tubes on one side of the web are connected to one pole of the supply and those on the other side are connected to the other pole of the supply. The outer surface of a cup-shaped article 55, Fig. 7, is treated by placing a roller 57 inside the cup and a discharge tube 58 outside. The article may be rotated on a turntable 62. A web 65, Fig. 8, is treated on both sides by passing it over a roller 66 forming one electrode, the web being spaced from the roller by a layer 67 of an insulating semi-porous material such as paper or cloth. The discharge tube 69 is spaced from the web as before and connections are made from the poles of the supply to the roller and the tube. By this means both sides of the web are subjected to an electric discharge. Ozone, formed by the discharge modifies the surface of the web in such a way that it becomes receptive to printing ink, colouring or adhesive.
