Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] An air conditioner particularly for fitting into a wall in a house, or mobile trailer, and containing a refrigeration system comprises an open ended rectangular sheet metal casing 10 thermally and acoustically lined where required as at 11 and divided, by a vertical partition 14, into front and rear compartments 12, 13 respectively, the front compartment, with a pair of doors 15 hinged to a central pillar 16, being further divided by a partition 17 into portions 12a and 12b. An evaporator 18 is located in the portion 12a<SP> </SP>directly behind the door controlling the entry of room air into the casing, a filter screen 19, made e.g. of nylon, being removably disposed in front of the evaporator coil 18. Air is drawn into the portion 12a across the evaporator coil 18 by means of a fan 20 disposed behind the coil 18 and driven by an electric motor 21 which is located in the rear compartment 13 and also drives therein a second fan 22 arranged in front of a condenser 23 to suck external air into the rear compartment through a grille 24 and discharge it across the condenser 23. A compressor 25, located in the rear compartment, is cooled by the external air passing over it. In front of the compressor, in the compartment 12, there is a refrigerated space for storing, e.g. bottles 26, the bottles being housed within a perforated removable plastic container 27 which is swept by the conditioned air as it is discharged into the the room. Electric heating elements 28 are located in the front compartment 12 to heat the discharged air. A damper 30, normally operable by means of a knob 30a, permits a controlled amount of external air to be mixed with the air recirculating through the front compartment 12, the external air being diverted to pass through the filter screen 19 and over the evaporator 18 by means of a baffle 31. The flow of refrigerant through the system may be reversed by means of a valve 32 to provide heat on the heat pump principle. When ventilation only is required, the fans alone are switched on, the compressor being switched on when cooling, or heating on the heat pump principle, is required. Channels 33, on 'the floor of the casing 10, collect condensate the fan 22 being provided with a condensate sling ring.34. Part of the partition 17 constitutes a control panel, Fig. 3 on which is provided a switch 36 for the fans and the electric heaters, a thermostat switch 37 for controlling the compressor 25, a switch 38 for isolating the compressor 25, and a night light switch 39 for illuminating the control panel. The casing of the front compartment 12, is arranged to enable supply and return air ducts 40, 41 respectively to be fitted.
