765,418. Gas turbine plant. McCULLOUGH, A. L. March 1, 1955 [March 8, 1954], No. 6027/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A shaft coupling for the compressor and turbine shafts of a gas turbine engine adapted to provide for accurate axial adjustment thereof, comprises a hollow shaft 12, 13 adapted to be secured by a flange 11 to the turbine shaft and connected through a toothed coupling 14, 15 to a flange 10 of the compressor shaft. Secured to the hub 10 also is a tension-rod 16 having a screw-threaded end 21 engaging a complementary screwed sleeve 20 which has a flange 22 clamped by bolts 24 between the end 12a and a ring 23 of the hollow shaft portions 12, 13 respectively. The end of the tension rod 16 also has a splined portion 29 which is locked to a splined portion 28 of sleeve 20 by means of a double splined ring 30 which is normally held by a spring 33 against a snap-ring 34 on the rod 16. To effect an axial adjustment of the shafts, the bolts 24 are slackened off to free the flange 22 of sleeve 20 and an externally splined wrench is inserted through the turbine end of the hollow shaft 12 to engage the splines 28 of sleeve 20. Axial movement of the wrench disengages locking ring 30 from splines 28 and allows the sleeve 20 to be rotated and moved axially along the tension-rod 16, the toothed coupling 14, 15 allowing such movement. After the required adjustment the wrench is removed to allow ring 30 to re-engage splines 28 to lock the rod and sleeve, and the bolts 24 are tightened to clamp the flange 22 of sleeve 20. Securing pins 27 may also be provided between the flange 22 and hollow shaft 13.
