Abstract
3:6:9-Trithiahendecanedioic acid is prepared by adding slowly methyl b -bromoethylmercaptoacetate to a mixture of methanol solutions of sodium methoxide, of which one has been saturated with H2S and refluxing. The solid matter obtained after purification steps is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution and the acid precipitated by acidification. 3:6:9:12-Tetrathiatetradecanedioic acid is prepared by reacting thiourea with b -bromoethylmercaptoacetic acid and refluxing, adding sodium hydroxide solution and continuing refluxing, adding ethylene bromide and then aqueous sodium hydroxide and continuing refluxing, and finally acidifying. Methyl b -bromoethylmercaptoacetate is prepared by refluxing b -bromoethylmercaptoacetic acid with thionyl chloride, removing excess thionyl chloride, adding methanol, and continuing refluxing. b -Bromoethylmercaptoacetic acid is prepared by saturating b -hydroxyethylmercaptoacetic acid with gaseous HBr. b -Hydroxyethylmercaptoacetic acid is prepared by mixing 2-bromoethanol with mercaptoacetic acid and adding aqueous sodium hydroxide.
