A machine for counting paper money comprises a plurality of bill-receiving compartments 4, Fig. 1, separable bill-feeding means 5, 6 associated with each compartment, a plurality of piece-counters 12, one associated with each compartment and actuated by separation of said bill-feeding means, a totalizer, not shown, responsive to separation of any of said billfeeding means, a plurality of auxiliary piececounters 14, one associated with each of the prior-mentioned piece-counters and operable in unison therewith, and means to re-set the auxiliary piece-counters independently of the first-mentioned piece-counters. The machine described is a modification of the type of machine disclosed in Specifications 627,101 and 642,413. Each auxiliary counter 14 is mechanically connected to its associated piece-counter 12. The auxiliary counters 14 are zeroized simultaneously by actuation of a solenoid 25 connected by a link 24 to a bar 23 to which the re-set levers 22 of each auxiliary is connected. The control circuit of the driving motor is arranged so that when the totalizer registers a count of fifty or a hundred the circuit is broken and a brake is operated. The re-set solenoid may be in the circuit of the shelf-dumping solenoid so that zeroizing of the auxiliary counters is effected before re-starting of the motor. A check between the total registered on the totalizer against the number of bills on the shelves of each compartment as registered on the auxiliary counters is thus readily obtained.
