Abstract
764,464. Indicating-apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 27, 1955 [Jan. 27, 1954], No. 2521/55. Class 106 (4). [Also in Groups XI and XVIII] A dial or panel lighting arrangement for indicating-apparatus comprises a sheet of lightconducting transparent material covering an area which is to be viewed, a portion of the sheet which may extend beyond this area being contoured by an edge of parabolic shape with a' source of light at the focal point of the parabolic edge. The dial 1 of an electric clock may be edge-lit from an electric lamp 3 in series with a few turns of wire coupled to the clock motor transformer and with a carbon pressure type resistor with adjusting.knob 5 for controlling the intensity of illumination. The lamp 3 is located at the focal point of two inclined parabolically shaped edges of an extension of the dial 1 of glass or a suitable plastic material and a reflecting edge coating 18a may be provided. The lamp 3 is shielded at the front by a cap 21 and is also shielded by a member 22 so that light may pass from the lamp only into the dial 1. Numerals and the dial pattern are indented on the rear surface 2 of the dial and increase in depth as their distance from the lamp increases to keep their illumination uniform. Alternatively the dial may taper in thickness. The dial cup 24, 25 aids in reflecting light back into the dial. The two parabolic surfaces prevent shadows from a central. stack, otherwise a single parabolic surface will suffice. A. similar arrangement may be used to illuminate a number of instruments mounted on a panel either from. a single source or from separate sources for each instrument.
