Abstract

<PICT:0763461/III/1> A combined heating and catalytic body comprises a resistor 1 which may be metallic or non-metallic and may be made of rods or tubes or granules which is supplied by current through insulated and shielded nipples 8 and 81. The resistor is enclosed by a fireproof dielectric layer 2 preferably of porcelain, alumina or quartz, and this layer is coated with a thin catalytic layer, preferably of a metal, such as a platinum group metal or alloy. The complex body may possess at least one axis of symmetry so that the heat developed flows uniformly from the resistor to the catalytic layer. The complex body is arranged in a chamber 3 whose internal wall is coated with a catalytic layer similar to that on the fireproof layer. The reaction chamber is arranged in a metallic case 4 containing thermal insulator 5 with inlet 6 and outlet 7 for the reaction gases. The gap between chamber 3 and heater 2 comprises a reaction chamber. The reeactor may contain more than one heating body. The current supply and the rate of gas flow may be controlled so that the temperature imparted to the gases is less than that of the catalytic layers of the heating bodies and the temperature of the outer catalytic layer is greater than that of the gas but less than that of the catalytic layer of the heating body. The process of the invention is useful for all continuous endothermic catalytic gas reactions and the production of hydrocyanic acid and hydrogen from ammonia and methane is exemplified.
