Abstract

Erythromycin is produced in increased yield by growing an erythromycin-producing-microorganism especially a suitable strain of Streptomyces erythreus in a culture medium containing an ester of a long-chain fatty acid having at least 12 carbon atoms in an amount of at least 0.25 per cent by volume of the nutrient medium. The ester may be added prior to inoculation with the micro-organism or intermittently during the fermentation. The ester may be a triglyceride, e.g. glyceryl trioleate, or a naturally occurring animal or vegetable fat or oil, e.g. lard oil, corn oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, sesame oil, olive oil, coconut oil and margarine oil. It is preferred to add 0.25 to 6.0 per cent ester based on the volume of the culture medium. The methods of cultivation and the composition of the culture medium are according to those disclosed in Specification 708,159.
