Abstract

A heat-convertible synthetic resin mixture substantially stable at room temperature is made mixing a thermosetting monohydric phenol-aldehyde resin (a) with a polyhydric phenol - aldehyde resin (b) which is itself substantially stable at room temperature, the unreacted aldehyde content of (a) being insufficient for any activation of (b) to cause appreciable curing of the mixture at room temperature. Resin (b) is used in amount e.g. of 30 to 70 per cent by weight of the total mixture. Preferably, resin (a) is made from phenol and formaldehyde in the molar ratio of 1 : 1 to 1 : 1.5 and resin (b) is made from resorcinol and formaldehyde in the molar ratio of 1 : 5 to 1 : 0.8. Mixing of the resins may be effected in solution in a non-reactive volatile solvent. Fibrous or like felt or woven material may be impregnated either with the resin mixture or first with a solution of resin (a) and then with a solution of resin (b), and moulded, e.g. into an aerofoil skin by the vacuum moulding technique (see Group V). The examples illustrate the latter proceedure wherein asbestos fibre felts are impregnated first with an aqueous solution of resin (a) and then with an acetone or methylated spirit solution of resin (b). Other solvents specified are chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, diethyl ether, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone and methylene dichloride.
