[Also in Group XXXII] A fluid check device comprising a piston and cylinder has a connection between the ends of the cylinder with means permitting unidirectional flow therethrough, the connection being closed on a predetermined movement of the piston in one direction, and at least one restricted by-pass connection between the ends of the cylinder opening at a point beyond the travel of the piston in at least one direction; the device provides buffer action in the dooropening direction and variable checking during closing. The arrangement shown is applied to a sliding-swinging door such as that described in Specification 396,162, having a roller 19 engaging a guide 18 in the lintel and being pivoted at a point midway between the roller 19 and a pivot 14, to an arm mounted on the latter pivot, the door being closed by a spring acting in connection with the pivot. The pivot 14 has splined engagement with a pinion 22 mounted in bearings in the lintel to actuate the check, and is retractable from the pinion to allow removal of the door and its supporting arm from the frame. The door is held open by engagement of the roller 19 between two pivoted members 52 held in the roller-retaining position by spring ball-catches. The check piston 31 is connected to a rack 24 engaging the pinion 22 to be moved to the left as the door is opened; any other means of actuating the piston by movement of the door may be used. The piston 31 has the usual passage through it with a ball-valve allowing free flow of fluid while the door is opening and has fixed to it a valve member 38 which co-operates with grooves 37 in the cylinder wall to allow free passage of fluid except when the door is nearly open, the grooves terminating short of the left-hand end of the cylinder; the last part of the opening movement of the door is thus buffered by the fluid only being able to escape through a by-pass port 42 communicating with the other end of the cylinder through a restricted passage, preferably with an adjustable valve. The latter passage may open at 43 into the ring-hand end of the cylinder clear of the piston travel, or may be closed by the piston when the door is nearly closed; in addition to controlling the final opening it also controls the closing movement. A second by-pass passage with ports 48, 49 may be provided to give free movement during the middle part of the closing. In a modification, the passage through the piston is replaced by an equivalent passage in the cylinder wall and the valve member 36 and grooves 37 are dispensed with, their function being performed by the piston and a check-valved passage in the cylinder wall.
