Means for supporting a ramp f, Fig. 5, for loading vehicles on to a railway truck, and a turntable i for receiving the vehicles, are independently mounted on the truck frame a which is adapted to be supported directly from the ground during loading and unloading. The truck frame may be supported from the ground directly by suitable jacks or may be provided, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, with arms g which may be pivoted to an outboard position to engage with jacks b. Guide tracks may be carried by the platform k of the turntable which may be mounted on a central king-pin carried by the piston q, Fig. 5, of a hydraulic ram by which the turntable may be raised and lowered so that a load carried by it will clear obstructions on the platform of the truck. Suitable mechanical devices may replace the hydraulic ram. The platform of the turntable may be mounted to tilt, as a vehicle is driven on, so reducing the bending moments on the turntable support. Rails on the turntable may extend beyond the platform k to carry vehicles whose wheel-bases are greater than the diameter of the turntable. Further ground engaging devices w may be carried beneath the buffer boards of the truck; this enables the ramps f to be secured to the ends, as well as to the side, of the truck. A truck according to the invention may serve to feed loaded vehicles to and from adjacent trucks in a train.
