Abstract
760,788. Electric tests. EAST LANCASHIRE CHEMICAL CO., Ltd. April 9, 1953 [May 2, 1952], No. 11129/52. Class 37. Apparatus for e.g. measuring the thickness of a layer of electrically conductive material which may be magnetic or not comprises a, solenoid test head which is placed in contact with the surface to be examined, the change in impedance in the solenoid being indicated by a meter. As shown, the head comprises a coil 19 with a fixed, low-loss iron core 20 which protrudes a short distance beyond the coil 19, the external end being hemispherical, surrounded by a magnetic screen 23 and enclosed in a brass tube 28, the core being centralized in the screen 23 by discs 24, 25 of insulating material. The coil 19 is energized by an H.F. oscillator A via a coaxial cable 16, and is tuned to the oscillator frequency by a parallel condenser 18, the voltage across the parallel circuit being measured by a meter C. The apparatus may also be used for locating flaws, or for comparison of quality of layers of equal thickness.
