Abstract

The polymerization of monomeric vinyl chloride is inhibited by incorporating therein a compound having the formula: <FORM:0760050/IV(b)/1> in which R is a substituted or unsubstituted monocyclic aryl group and X is a halogen atom or a group having the formula -OR1 in which R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted monocyclic aryl group. Specified compounds are aryl haloformates such as phenyl chloroformate, tolyl chloroformate, xylyl chloroformate, chlorophenyl chloroformate, 2,4-dibromophenyl bromoformate, o-hydroxyphenyl bromoformate, p-nitrophenyl chloroformate, p-isopropylphenyl chloroformate and p-2-ethylhexylphenyl chloroformate and diaryl carbonates such as diphenyl carbonate, dixylyl carbonate, ditolyl carbonate, di - (nitrophenyl) carbonate, bis - (2,4 - dichlorophenyl) carbonate, di-(isopropylphenyl) carbonate, di-(o-hydroxyphenyl) carbonate, di-(2-ethylhexylphenyl) carbonate and di-(2,4,5-tribromophenyl)carbonate. Unsymmetrical diaryl carbonates may also be used. Preferably 1 to 1000 parts of the compound to each million parts of monomeric vinyl chloride is used.
