759,975. Grinding steel bands: NOTZ & CO. AKT.-GES. Aug. 12, 1954 [Aug. 13, 1953], No. 23382/54\ Class 60 Round edges are ground on a steel band 14 by drawing it ah a speed of 25 to 65 feet per second between parallel grinding discs 17 in a position which is inclined to the disc shafts 171. Preferably two pairs 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, of such discs are provided together with two pairs of discs 16, 16<SP>1</SP> in each of which the discs have a greater axial separation than in the pairs 17, 17<SP>1</SP> so that the band passes between them in a position parallel to their axes for flat grinding of its edges. Between the discs the band passes over guide rollers 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, 19 and is driven by one of a pair of reels 2, 2<SP>1</SP> either of which may be driven at will by means of a chain-driven friction disc 11 on a hand lever 10. This hand lever also operates a cam disc 8 which through levers 4, 5 tightens a brake band 3 on the undriven reel Pointers 21, 21<SP>1</SP> provide a continuous indication of the length of band stored on each of the reels 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. The grinding discs 16 or 17 are secured by spring rings to flanged discs 172 and pressed against a freely-rotatable roll 176 by springs.
