Abstract

759,301. Continuous-casting machines. DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AKT.- GES. April 1, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 9609/54. Class 83 (1). In a process of continuous-casting with chill moulds divided into separate loose parts and cooperating to form a mouldtrain which is maintained by withdrawing moulds therefrom and adding moulds thereto, the mouldtrain is so driven as to press the moulds together whilst the parts of the moulds are also being pressed against one another, preferably yieldingly. The chill mould train 8 moves in a vertical guideway comprising a rigid guide 2 having rollers 3, and a resilient guide 4 of rollers 5 loaded by springs 7. The mould-halves 46 include rack sections 47 which mesh with wheels 9, 10 at the top and bottom of the train respectively, the wheels 10 being braked in relation to the positivelydriven wheels 9 so that the moulds are firmly held one above the other. As the mould train moves down with the casting, pins 11 on the bottom mould halves engage guide surfaces 12 and the halves move to the positions 12<SP>1</SP> adjacent rams 13, by means of which they are moved into guideways 15 above stop-members 16. When the guideways are filled with mould-halves the top mould-half in each guideway is guided at 18 to a vertical section 19 in which mould-halves come together to form a closed mould at the top of the train. The casting 32 is engaged by rollers 28, 29, the roller 28 being driven in synchronism with the driving wheels 9. When starting, a plug is inserted in the mould train and lowered therewith. The mould-halves may be shaped to interengage. The mould-halves are cooled while on the surfaces 12 by passing through a coolant-container 20, through which the casting passes without coming into contact with the coolant. The moulds may be further cooled while in the guideway 15 by sprays 21 of air or water, and coated by means 22 spring-urged against the mould. The casting is cooled by annular nozzles 40, 40a, and cut into lengths by a flying cutting burner 41. Pouring-apparatus. The metal is poured from a hopper 37 into a tiltable intermediate dish 36 with an adjustable outlet aperture 39, thence into a funnel 33 with an extension 34 reaching into the lower of the two moulds positioned in the guide section 19. The intermediate vessel may be heated.
