Abstract

759,190. Cutting by spark discharge. WICKMAN, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1955 [Feb. 3, 1954], No. 3189/54. Class 83 (4). In an electro-erosion apparatus in which the spark passes through a liquid dielectric between the electrode f and the workpiece g and the feed mechanism is responsive to the voltage or current across the spark gap, the electrode is vibrated by means including a cam n in order to cause a localized pumping action on the liquid dielectric between the electrode and the workpiece and thereby disperse detached metal particles from the spark path. The electrode is attached to a quill h mounted in a slide b movable on a guide a by a feed-screw c rotated through gearing d by a motor e whose speed is controlled by the voltage or current in the sparkgap between the electrode f and the workpiece g. The quill is movable towards the workpiece by a spring k and away therefrom by a lever m actuated by the cam n which is rotated through gearing o by a constant-speed motor p. The electrode is retracted by the cam at a rate greater than that at which the feed mechanism can respond to the charge of spark voltage or current during such retraction. In a modification the electrode is moved towards the workpiece by the cam and away from it by the spring. In another modification both movements are effected by the cam, one end of the arm m engaging a track in the cam.
