Abstract
759,122. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1954 [Dec. 14, 1953], No. 31387/54. Class 83 (4). In a machine in which filler wire is continuously fed to an arc struck between the work and an inert gas shielded non-consumable electrode, the filler wire is automatically retracted when the welding current is switched off. A carriage running along a track carries the welding head N and wire feeding mechanism. The wire W is fed by rollers G through a flexible tube F and a guide D secured to the welding head N. A lever 12 is actuated by an electromagnet 16 energized only when the welding current is switched on to move the end of the flexible tube towards or away from the rollers G, so that when the welding current is disconnected the tip of the wire W is retracted. The wire feed motor and the welding current are controlled by the same switch.
