Abstract

In the production of an ingot of silicon, powdered silicon is melted in a crucible of which at least that part in contact with the silicon is of silicon nitride. The crucible may be moulded from finely divided silicon nitride produced by heating finely divided silicon to a temperature just below its melting point in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Alternatively the crucible may be produced by coating the interior of another refractory material, e.g. graphite, with a layer of finely divided silicon and then converting the silicon to silicon nitride. Heating may be effected in a silicon tube surrounded by a high frequency heating coil in an atmosphere of argon. The silicon may be directionally freezed by moving the crucible along the tube out of the heating zone.ALSO:A graphite crucible may be lined with silicon nitride by coating the interior of the crucible with a layer of finely divided silicon and heating in an atmosphere of nitrogen to a temperature just below the melting point of silicon.
