Abstract

757,188. Tinning; cleaning metal; fluxing. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 27, 1953], No. 32549/54. Class 82(2). Poppet valves are provided with an aluminium or aluminium alloy protective coating on the valve head by dipping into the molten coating metal and thereafter removing excess coating metal by a gaseous jet directed against the seating surface. The valve head is first dipped into a salt bath at 1280‹- 1400‹F. of a composition 37-57 KCl; 25-45 NaCl; 8-20 Na 3 AlF 6 ; 0À5-12 AlF 3 , all in parts per centum and then dipped in the coating metal (if aluminium alloy is used. A1 must comprise at least 80 per centum) for 5-10 seconds. A short rinse in the salt bath may follow to remove some of the excess coating metal; the salt bath in this case may float on the coating metal. The part is then gas blasted in the apparatus described below and air-cooled to below 800‹F., then water quenched. If the valve head is very dirty, it may be cleaned by dipping in a molten electrolytic salt bath at 900‹F., washed in water, and then pickled in a mixture of hydrofluoric, sulphuric and nitric acids in water. Alternatively, or in addition, degreasing solvents or grit or sand blasting may be resorted to. Parts not to be coated are treated by a stop-off comprising 20-50 per centum sodium silicate in aqueous solution. The gaseous blast is applied in an apparatus comprising a cylindrical casing 10 having secured therein two cylinders 22, 14 the former being screw-threaded to vary the distance apart of these cylinders, the gap forming an annular nozzle 30. The bottom cylinder 14 is secured to the outer casing 10 and provided with a gas inlet 40. A further gas inlet pipe 48 provides a blast on the end of the head of the valve, which is held in a clamp 54. Compressed air is supplied to the device at 75-110 1bs. sq. in. but other gases could be used.
