Abstract

757,067. Discharge lamps. BROWN, R. Feb. 13, 1950 [Feb. 11, 1949], No. 3826/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] The starting of a fluorescent lamp having filamentary electrodes and supplied from a transformer connected to the supply through a resistive ballast (see Group XXXV) is facilitated by two narrow and parallel metal strips of U- shape of for example 1 mm. wide and half an inch apart adhering to or deposited along the whole length and outside of the lamp envelope or a single strip may be used. Alternatively the edges of a metal channel accommodating cables to the electrode terminals may be used in place of the strips. The strips or their equivalent are connected to a supply lead through a resistance or condenser or both. Under conditions of high humidity starting is also facilitated by coating the exterior of the envelope with " Sil Aneal" " (Registered Trade Mark). A transparent coating of cerium and/or thorium oxide may be applied on the exterior or interior surface of the lamp envelope on metal strip to facilitate starting. The lamps can have internal auxiliary electrodes and a filling of krypton. Specification 757,080, [Group XXXV], is referred to.
