Abstract

756,354. Tube-making machines. BOWATER DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH, Ltd. July 2, 1954 [July 14, 1953], No. 19562/53. Class 99(2). A mounting for a winding mandrel 1 comprises a fixed support for the driven end of the mandrel and a retractable steady 3 for the other end of the mandrel, supporting and guiding means 29, 31 for the steady whereby the latter may reciprocate in a radial direction towards and away from the mandrel to allow removal of a convolutely-wound tube from the mandrel, and driving means for reciprocating the steady. As shown, the steady 3 is cupped at 4 to receive the free end of the mandrel shaft 2 and carries parallel channel members 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, a block 6 slidable in the member 5 being connected by a key 7 to a wheel 8 driven through worm gearing 10, 11 by a motor 9, and a block 12 slidable in the channel 5<SP>1</SP> being pivotally connected at 13 to an arm 14 fast with a rocking shaft 15 disposed across the machine. A pair of arms 16 carrying a pressure pad 17 and counterweights 18 are freely mounted on the shaft 15. An arm 19 fast on the shaft 15 and near the steady 3 carries a set-screw 20 which bears on one of the arms 16, and a catch 21 actuated by a solenoid 22 holds that arm in a lowered position. Secured to the shaft 15 and near the driven end of the mandrel is an arm 23 connected by a link 24 to a bell-crank 25 which in turn is connected by a link 26 to a slide 27 movable in guides 28 on the mandrel headstock housing, the slide actuating mechanism for contracting the mandrel. In operation, starting of the motor 9 causes rotation of the wheel 8 to lift the block 6 and the channel 5 in which the blocks slides whereby the steady is raised in the guides 29, 31 until the cup 4 supports the shaft 2 and the motor is automatically stopped by a limit switch. Whilst the steady is rising the block 12 slides in the channel 5<SP>1</SP> to swing the arm 14 which rocks the shaft 15 so that the slide 27 is raised by the linkage 24, 25, 26 and disengages the actuating means for contracting the mandrel, the mandrel therefor expanding. Rocking of the shaft 15 causes the arm 19 and screw 20 to move away from the arm 16 so that when the catch 21 is released the counterweights 18 bring the pad 17 to bear on the tube being wound on the mandrel. Specifications 756,355, 756,356 and 756,357 [all in Group VIII], are referred to.
