Abstract

756,270. Folding screens. JANSON, E. U. July 27, 1954, No. 21969/54. Class 20(3). An accordion-pleated screen, particularly for heat insulating purposes, is built up from a number of identical elements 5 which are each formed by folding a sheet of flexible material, e.g. cardboard, canvas, or plastic, in the form of an H to form air pockets 3 and gluing their stems together at 2, so that air pockets 4 are also formed between the middle webs of neighbouring H elements. The screen folds down as shown in Fig. 2. A screen can be formed of double-H elements each having four stems interconnected by cross webs so that seven air pockets are provided in the direction of insulation. The insulation properties may be further improved by coating the wall surfaces of the air pockets with heat reflecting colour, or by attaching heat reflecting linings, e.g. metal foils, to them. If it is desired to have a light transmissive screen, slits 9 can be included without causing any essential reduction in the heat insulation. In modifications, the walls of the air pockets may be formed by continuous vertical sheets joined by cross webs and folded in parallel folds, or the walls of the air pockets are formed from shorter lengths of material each having one fold and being articulated to neighbouring strips and cross webs. The screen can be operated by cords like a venetian blind.
