Abstract

756,201. Welding by fusion. GRAVER TANK & MFG. CO., Inc. March 3, 1954 [May 11, 1953], No. 6252/54. Class 83 (4). In a submerged arc welding process for welding upwardly directed elongated seams, the molten flux and metal is held in place by pressure applied through a strip of compressible heat-resistant material. The strip is of loosely felted glass wool fibres bonded together with a plastic or two such strips may be bonded to the sides of a strip of aluminium foil. A tool for welding a vertical seam consists of a casing 12, Fig. 3, carrying an electrode holder 13, a flux hopper 11 and a roll 19 of the glass wool strip. The tool is pressed against the plates P3 and moved upwardly under the guidance of a projection 23 engaging in the unwelded seam. One end of the strip 20 is secured to the work, and the strip is pressed against the welded seam by a concave roller 22 and a concave wall 25 of the casing 12. A thin layer of the granular flux F tends to be interposed between the layer of molten flux covering the weld and the strip 20 and shields the latter from the heat of the weld. The tool is maintained at the correct distance from the plates by rollers 24 and flanges on the roller 22. The front wall 25 may be inclined towards the plates so as to progressively compress the strip 20. In welding plates of ¢ inch thickness, a weld bead is first deposited on one side of the seam, and then weld beads are simultaneously deposited on both sides to complete the weld. In a modification, Fig. 11, the roller 22 is replaced by a shoe 25C having an upper surface supporting the strip and a concave front face 25E pressing the strip against the welded seam and having edges bearing on the plates P3. The shoe is fixed in the casing 12. In a further modification, Fig. 13, an endless belt 25<SP>1</SP> supports and compresses the strip 20. The belt 25<SP>1</SP> is carried on concave rollers 22, 22A the edges of which roll along the plates P3, and the belt is prevented from slipping by a roller 22B engaging the roller 22A and is tensioned by a spring- loaded roller 22C.
