Abstract

755,635. Electrodeposition of iron. INGENIEURSBUREAU LEMET CHROMIUM H. VAN DER HORST N.V., and HORST, H. VAN DER. Jan. 15, 1954 [Jan. 16, 1953], No. 1298/54. Class 41. Cathodically deposited iron is produced by using as electrolyte an acidic aqueous solution containing per litre 10 to 100 grams fluoborate calculated as BF 4 , not less than 6.5 grams chloride calculated as Cl, and ferrous iron radicals. Preferably the electrolyte is of pH 2 to 5, the temperature is 135‹ to 150‹ F., and the cathode current density is 30 to 70 amps/sq. ft., a ferrous anode-iron or steel-being used. Anode sludge is collected in a porous bag, preferably of vinyl copolymers. Ammonium and sulphate radicals may be included in the electrolyte if desired while a wetting agent such as sodium lauryl sulphate may also be added. The compound supplying the fluoborate radical should be dissolved in water first followed by the other ingredients, iron is added to precipitate impurities, followed by activated carbon and finely divided wood cellulose to absorb the impurities, and the solution is then filtered, the wetting agent if required being added after filtering. The surface to be plated especially if of iron or steel is first vapour-degreased if necessary and then cleaned with pumice, followed by electrolytic etching as anode in a strong sulphuric acid solution. The iron-plated cathode may be heated e.g. to 600‹ F. to improve its toughness and ductility.
