Abstract

A metal surface is coated with a vitreous enamel by forming a phosphate coating on the surface, heating the surface and coating in an oxidizing atmosphere to form a mixed phosphate-oxide coating, the oxide being formed from the metal, and then applying and firing one or more layers of enamel. The metal, which may be ferrous or titanium, is treated with a phosphate-coating solution containing, e.g. zinc, manganese, sodium, potassium or ammonium phosphate, preferably one of the latter three, to which may be added oxidizing agents such as nitrates, nitrites, chlorates, bromates, sulphites, peroxides and organic nitro-compounds such as meta-nitrobenzene sulphonate, rinsed in cold water with or without subsequent drying as by a strong air blast, flash-drying or immersion in a water-absorbing organic solvent such as a ketone, e.g. acetone, an alcohol, e.g. isobutyl alcohol or a glycol, e.g. ethyl ether of ethylene glycol, and heated in air, oxygen or an atmosphere containing water to a temperature above 1100 DEG F., preferably 1200 DEG to 1550 DEG F., for three minutes. The total weight of the coating should be 0,4 to 12 grams per sq. foot, preferably 4 to 5 grams per sq. foot, of which the weight of phosphate (as PO4) should be 1 to 60mg. per sq. foot, preferably 20 to 25 mg. per sq. foot. Any known vitreous enamel coating may then be employed. The enamelling of mild steel panels by immersion in an aqueous acidic solution of monosodium phosphate, heating in air at 1350 DEG F. for three minutes and coating with a Ti-containing enamel slip and firing at 1480 DEG F. for four minutes is described by way of example as are phosphating solutions comprising (a) zinc dihydrogen phosphate and sodium chlorate, (b) ortho phosphoric acid and sodium 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulphonate and (c) zinc dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chlorate, ammonium fluoride and tetrasodium ethylene diamine tetraacetate.
