Abstract

In a valve or cock having relatively rotatable closure members in sliding engagement, a <PICT:0755536/IV(a)/1> part at least of the sliding surface of one or both of the members is formed of a synthetic resin material containing graphite or granules of some other solid friction reducing material. The hardness of the synthetic resin material is such that it does not deform appreciably under the contact pressure between the valve members. In the plug cock shown, a sleeve 31 is moulded about a brass plug 20 between flanges 30. The single sleeve may be replaced by a number of axially spaced sleeves or alternatively the complete plug may be of the synthetic resin material. During the moulding of the sleeve 31, the through passage 21 is blocked by a removable core member or alternatively the passage 21 is bored after the moulding operation. The plastics material may be graphite-loaded "Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark). The tapered bore 12 in the cock body 11 may be provided with a single sleeve such as 31 or a number of axially spaced sleeves of graphite-loaded synthetic resin material. According to the Provisional Specification a thermo-setting plastic which is chemically inert with respect to the gas or other fluid to be controlled may be used.
