Abstract

755,272. Cable terminals; electroplating. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. April 14, 1954 [April 23, 1953], No. 11042/54. Classes 38 (1) and 41. A connector comprises a ferrule 2 and a cup 6 having an elongated portion 8 fitting in the ferrule, and receiving the bared end 14 of a cable, and an enlarged portion 12 fitting round the cable insulation 18. The cup is filled with corrosion-inhibiting material such as petroleum jelly mixed with nickel powder and when not in use is closed by a cap 32. The connector is for use particularly with aluminium cables and both the ferrule and cup are preferably formed of aluminium, tin-plated to prevent formation of oxide. The oxide layer on the cable is removed by the action of crimping the connector on to the cable, the metal particles in the corrosion-inhibitor assisting in this by initially penetrating the layer. A method of tin-plating the connector is described wherein the connector is first etched with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid to remove the oxide coating after which it is washed and given a flash coating of zinc by dipping in a solution comprising zinc oxide, sodium hydroxide and water. The connector is then washed again and flash coated with copper in a bath of sodium carbonate, copper and sodium cyanide. After washing, the connector is electro-plated with tin in the usual manner. This plating is then heated to cause it to reflow, the connector at the same time being mechanically agitated and a final layer of tin is then electro-plated on the first one. Specification 673,198 is referred to.
