A layer type cell for incorporation in a pile battery consists of a container f open at the top and bottom, a negative electrode d provided with a conducting foil or coating e, an electrolyte carrier c and a depolarizer electrode a which protrudes through the top of the container to make contact with the negative electrode of the adjacent cell. The electrode a may be surrounded by paper b. The face of the depolarizer which protrudes through the container is provided with a dish-shaped conducting layer z which may be cemented or welded to the inside of the container and may consist of a mixture of a plastic material and graphite. The member z may consist of a preformed conducting foil surrounding the whole of the electrode a except the lower face. An additional conducting layer y may be provided between adjacent cells.
