A stone breaking or crushing machine comprises a plurality of hammers resiliently mounted on a driven shaft B to rotate within a casing A, each hammer extending between the bars D of a grid to break or crush the stone thereon and subsequently further break or crush the stone to the required size against a sieve composed of longitudinal bars d, d<SP>1</SP>, the bars of the grid passing through the sides of the casing and being supported at their ends by members A<SP>1</SP> secured thereto and to the sides of the casing. Each hammer comprises a hub portion c, Fig. 4, keyed to the shaft B and formed with a circular rib c<SP>1</SP> having a projecting lug c<SP>2</SP> on one side, a striking member c<SP>3</SP> being carried by a pair of plates c<SP>4</SP> mounted on the rib c<SP>1</SP> and connected thereto by springs E extending between the lug c<SP>2</SP> and lugs c<SP>5</SP> formed on the plates c<SP>4</SP>.
