754,742. Television. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 15, 1955 [March 25, 1954], No. 8682/54. Class 40 (3). A colour television system includes separate transmitters for transmitting luminance and chrominance signals, suitable switch-gear being provided whereby, in the event of break-down of one transmitter, the luminance signal may be transmitted by the operative transmitter. As applied to the transmission of American M.T.S.C. type signals, the two chrominance components are transmitted from one transmitter as amplitude modulations of separate carriers, the frequencies of which are arranged to fall outside the band of the luminance transmission from the other transmitter. The blanking intervals in the chrominance signals may be used to convey signals, e.g. zero, peak or intermediate amplitude pulses or oscillations, to operate automatic gain control circuits in receivers.
