Abstract

754.518. Propeller shafts. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 28726/54. Class 80(2) The tubular propeller shaft 12 of a motor vehicle has press-fitted therein a helically-wound multi-ply cardboard liner 42, the outer ply 44 of which is corrugated, in order to reduce noise due to vibration. Forks 18, 20 for the universal joints are integral with caps 14, 16 welded to the ends of the shaft 12 and receive rollers 32 carried by the intermediate cross-member 24, 28. The complementary fork member 22 at the left-hand end is internally splined to receive a gear-box output shaft, while at the right-hand end the second pair of rollers is held in place on the intermediate member, for storage purposes, by a clip 30. The rollers, protected by dust shields 36, are held in place in the forks by plates 38 secured by screws 40.
