Abstract

754,070. Ball mills. VIBRO DYNAMIC ENGINEERING, Inc. Oct. 4, 1954, No. 28484/54. Class 59. Ball mill apparatus comprises a pair of ball mill drums mounted in spaced axial alignment for free linear axial movement and for axial rotation, the linear axial movement being effected by means applying forces acting wholly between the drums and parallel to the axes thereof for oscillating the drums simultaneously towards and away from each other. One of the drums may be replaced by a body equivalent thereto for balancing the oscillating movement which preferably takes place with a resonant frequency. The drums are moved towards each other electromagnetically and away from each other by springs. In the form shown, rotatable ball mill drums 1, 1<SP>1</SP> mounted in bearing supports 2, 2<SP>1</SP> have non-rotatably secured to the inner trunnions thereof seats 8, 8<SP>1</SP> between which springs 9, 9<SP>1</SP> are secured. Also mounted between the seats 8, 8<SP>1</SP> is an electromagnetic driving means comprising armature and field elements 12, 13 which are energised, when current flows through a coil 15, to move the drums 1, 1<SP>1</SP> towards each other. This movement continues until arms 29, 30 contact pins 27, 28 projecting from a switch box 26 to open normally-closed limit switches and break the circuit through the coil 15. The drums then move away from each other under the action of the springs 9, 9<SP>1</SP> until a plate 26<SP>1</SP> secured to the outer trunnion of drum 1 contacts a plate 25<SP>1</SP> to close contacts, 21, 22 Fig. 4, and energise a coil 18 in circuit with the coil 15 so that the latter is again energised to move the drums towards each other. The limit switches are connected in parallel with each other to that oscillation is prevented if the drums are unequally loaded. The position or length of the arms 29, 30 may be altered if it is desired to operate with drums having different masses. In a modification, Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), the drums, their bearing supports and their driving motors are mounted on a platform which is movable on ball bearings on a base.
