Abstract
Liquid esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids, e.g. methyl methacrylate, are polymerized in bulk, solution, or emulsion, in the presence of pulverulent polymers or unsaturated polyesters, a catalyst comprising the salt of an organic sulphinic acid and an acid, and optionally dyestuffs and fillers. The catalyst may also include a peroxy compound such as benzoyl peroxide, a heavy metal salt such as iron or cobalt naphthenate, a phenol, or an aromatic amine. The salt-forming base of the sulphinic acid salt may be ammonia, hydrazine, mono-, di-, or trimethylamine, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide, triethylenetetramine, guanidine, piperidine, or morpholine. Sulphinic acids mentioned are o-ethylbenzene sulphinic acid and o-cyclohexylbenzene sulphinic acid. Suitable acids are acetic, benzoic, methacrylic and toluene sulphinic acids. The pulverulent polymer may be a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate. The process may be used in dental prosthesis, for casting wireless covers and in cementing knife handles.
