753,390. Aircraft runways. STRATOPORT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 27, 1954 [April 29, 1953], No. 12206/54. Class 4. To avoid the necessity of a plurality of multi-directional runways at aerodromes a single landing strip comprising end-to-end opposed runways 30, 31 is provided along its sides with wind-deflecting screens 32 supported by bracing structure 54. The screens are perforated, preferably with circular holes, which may vary in size from top to bottom or each screen may be so perforated that when a number of screens are grouped along the side of a runway the porosity increases from the middle length of the runway towards each end. In other embodiments the screens comprise spaced slats arranged either vertically or horizontally or they may be formed from expanded metal or perforated corrugated sheet metal. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 the runways 30, 31 incline from the ends towards the centre to provide additional acceleration or retardation during take-off and landing respectively and a lateral track 40 connects the runways with dispersal points, though there may be a single level runway and the screens may be arranged along one side only. By this means aircraft can take-off or land on a single run. way substantially unaffected by cross winds.
