Abstract

<PICT:0753310/III/1> <PICT:0753310/III/2> <PICT:0753310/III/3> <PICT:0753310/III/4> <PICT:0753310/III/5> An apparatus for treating with liquid an irregular body, e.g. a motor car body, comprises a cam-controlled liquid-projecting device, with cam-operating means, and a conveyer to move past the liquid-projecting device a carriage which supports a mount for the body to be treated for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the mount, there being driving means for rotating the mount, and means located alongside the path of the carriage in the vicinity of the liquid-projecting device to control such rotation, and a coupling device movable with the carriage to couple this control means to the driving means, and to couple the carriage to the cam-operating means whereby movement of the carriage effects rotation of the mount in timed relation with the operation of the camoperating means. As shown, a car body 1 is secured on a mount 2 supported by a carriage 3 running on wheels 4 along rails 5. The mount 2 may be rotated by a sprocket 10, chain 11, sprocket 12, and mitre-gears 14, 15, the gear 15 being secured to a shaft 16 journalled in a frame 17 secured to the carriage 2. A sprocket 19, on shaft 16, is connected by an endless chain 18, to a sprocket 20 on a shaft 21, and maintained taut by a tensioner 22. The chain 18 carries at least three members 42 which are adapted successively to engage sockets 43, as the carriage 3 is advanced by a towing conveyer, and thus cause rotation of the mount 2 as the body 1 is carried past a paint spraying device 25. This may be of the kind described in Specification 652,720, its operation being controlled by two or more cams of a set 26, mounted on a common cam shaft 27, which is rotatable by bevel gears 28, 29, 31, 32 and 34, 35, the shaft 36 of the gear 35 having secured thereto a sprocket 37 around which, and a further sprocket 39, passes an endless chain 38, to which equispaced driving blocks 40 are secured. The blocks 40 are adapted to be engaged by a member 41 projecting from the frame 17, so that the cam-shaft 27 is rotated on passage of the carriage 3. To ensure proper engagement of the socket-engaging members 42 with the first socket 43, the frame 17 carries a trip member 44 which will engage a pivoted arm 45, and cause a pivoted selector member 47 connected therewith by a spring 46, to be interposed in the path of any mal-positioned member 42 and move the chain 18 a short distance. The first socket 43 comprises a fixed jaw 49 and a pivoted jaw 50, urged to its normal position by a spring; the remaining sockets each comprise a fixed jaw and a cushioned jaw. To deal with conditions arising where the bodies are improperly balanced on the mounts 2, the first two sockets, while maintained in fixed relation to each other, may be mounted on a slide 70 (Fig. 13) for simultaneous movement, being given a gradual acceleration towards the third socket 43 by a piston 73 working in a cylinder 74 to which air is admitted on the operation of a trip member 78 as a socket-engaging member enters the second socket 43. A trip 80 associated with the fourth socket controls the return movement. A disabling means comprising a roller 60 running on a track 61 and rotatably supported on a bracket 62, pivoted at 64 on the frame 17. On operation of a handle 67, the bracket 62 is rotated until a shoulder 65 thereon engages an abutment 66, when the roller 60 lifts the carriage 3, so that the socket-engaging members 42 and the block-engaging member 41 cannot be engaged with the sockets 42 or blocks 40.
