An apparatus for counting articles manufactured in a plurality of operations on a production machine comprises a counter, an article production machine, a plurality of switch means on said production machine energized respectively by the initiation of one of a predetermined number of operations in the production cycle of said machine, an open-contact associated with each respective switch means, means for sequentially closing said contacts only in response to sequential energization of said switch means, and means for advancing said counter energized by closing the last contact in the sequence. The counter 4, Fig. 1, is actuated by oscillation of a shaft 8 effected through linkage 9, 10 by the armature 14 of a solenoid 11. The counter prints on a card inserted in the opening 6 on operation of a lever 5. A solenoid 18 controls the wiper 19 of a rotary switch 31-38, Fig. 5, through a pawl and ratchet mechanizing the actuating stroke of the pawl of which is determined by an adjustable stop. Each of the contacts 31-38 of the rotary switch is connected to a corresponding switch 44-51 which are respectively actuated manually or automatically by the initiation of an operation of the machine. The solenoid 11 is in series with the contact 38. If necessary a time delay relay 52 may be in series with a switch 44-51. The arrangement is such that sequential operation of the switches 44-51 is required for stepping the wiper arm over the contacts 31-38 when the solenoid 11 will be energized to actuate the counter.
